There is nothing more frustrating than when you ask for help, you hear from someone, “What’s in it for me?” Yet, it is your silent and sometimes not so silent motivation: “What is in it for me?”
You are so involved in your daily life that you cannot notice the lives around you. And when the plight of another is brought to your attention you think or you verbalize, “What has that to do with me?” You may even have as your motto: “I don’t do anything unless there’s something in it for me.” You will not contribute, participate, or assist in any way unless it is an opportunity to help yourself.
Why your primary goal in life is to take care of number one-you:
You have done things for others before and they were ungrateful.
Other people only want to take what is yours.
No one every helps you.
Looking out for yourself is just a matter of survival.
You are afraid that the cost of helping someone else will be more than you can afford.
You are afraid of unwanted situation. (What would you I be getting myself into?)
You are afraid of being made a fool of.
Helping others is rarely enjoyable.
People waste large amounts of my time, just imagine how much time their problems will waste.
The Bible teaches that Christians are Servants. To realize your true identity as a Christian you must place yourself as a servant, a servant not a slave. A slave has no choice but to perform acts of servitude, while a servant has a submissive desire to assist others. A servant minded Christian does not wait to be told what to do, instead they anticipate the need and meet that need. Therefore, at the very heart of a Christian is servitude.
